5. Expertise and Capacity

10 years ago ICCO laid the foundation for its current Civic Engagement Alliance work. A human rights based approach was used to lobby and influence and contribute in this way to poverty alleviation for smallholder farmers in rural local communities. Networking with grassroots movements was ‘a winning formula’ to protect land rights.

CNV Internationaal has positively contributed to the cooperation between NGOs, civil society organizations, private sector actors and trade unions. At international level and in the Netherlands, CNV Internationaal contributes expertise in lobby and advocacy for labor rights, and access to several international networks such as ILO and IUTC. Kerk in Actie contributes in Indonesia in the area of respect of children’s rights and the prevention of child labor. This materializes by linking the ‘Stop Child Labor‘ consortium in India with the Indonesia program.

Alliance members cooperate in the palm oil sector with various professional Indonesian partners: PKPA, NGO Council and Penabulu work on lobby and advocacy at different levels, from grassroot level to national level, and HUKATAN and KSBSI are Indonesian trade union partners experienced in grassroots mobilization and advocating for labor rights.
